Shopify ships its news in two big packages per year – and both 2026 Editions, each with 150+ updates, shared one thread: AI is turning from feature into infrastructure. The Winter Edition (“Renaissance”, start of the year) made the admin speak your language and, almost in passing, tore down one of the oldest Plus walls; the Spring ’26 Edition (“Everywhere”, presented on June 17) switches commerce on inside AI assistants – by default, for every store. Here is the full overview of the updates that actually matter for merchants, plus what to do about them. Status: July 2026.

The short version

  • The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is active on every store since the Spring Edition – AI agents can read catalogues and build carts.
  • Shopify Catalog automatically syndicates eligible products to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and the Shop app; the new agentic section in the admin shows revenue per AI channel and, via Search Intelligence, the top AI queries in your category.
  • Checkout UI Extensions have been available on ALL paid plans since the Winter Edition – the most common reason to upgrade to Plus is history.
  • Sidekick went from chatbot to operator: multi-step tasks, Flow building from a sentence, ShopifyQL reports, custom-app generation, proactive suggestions via Pulse.
  • Native A/B testing (themes, checkout, email), B2B features on every plan, POS v11 and a rebuilt Hydrogen round off the year.
  • Shopify Scripts has been shut down since 30 June 2026 – unmigrated discount and shipping logic no longer runs.

Winter Edition “Renaissance”: the admin learns your language

The start-of-year edition was about operation – and about tearing down plan barriers.

Sidekick became an operator. The assistant understands the whole store as context (catalogue, customer groups, sales trends) and executes multi-step tasks across admin areas in a single request – roughly three times faster than its predecessor. The practical highlights: Flow automations from one sentence (“automatically tag customers who spend over 200 euros” becomes a finished, visualised workflow – including the ability to test flows against sample data before going live), analytics in natural language (Sidekick builds ShopifyQL reports and visualisations without query syntax) and – remarkable for smaller teams – the generation of simple custom apps from a plain-language requirement. Sidekick Pulse adds a proactive layer: personalised, actionable improvement suggestions based on your own store data. Theme changes by voice (“make this button round”) and shared Sidekick Skills for teams remain on board.

The checkout wall fell. Checkout UI Extensions – previously the crown argument for Shopify Plus – have been open to all paid plans since the Winter Edition. Custom checkout components (trust badges, extra fields, notices) are no longer a Plus question; only the deepest tier, composable Checkout Components for custom stacks, remains Plus/Enterprise. In parallel Shop Pay got faster (noticeably quicker completion through better autofill and faster identity checks), and checkout gained a 99.9 % uptime commitment.

B2B grew up. Native purchase-order numbers, payment terms (net 30/60/90) with approval workflows, volume pricing with up to ten quantity breakpoints per product, and company accounts with roles (purchasing manager, approver, requester) – classic wholesale without specialist apps.

For data people: multi-touch attribution (first-click, last-click, linear – cookieless), LTV cohort analyses with forecasting, and inventory intelligence with sell-through rates, days of stock and AI-supported restock alerts. Plus catalogue improvements such as products with up to 2,048 variants and a much stronger Bulk Operations API – relevant for anyone moving large catalogues or migrations.

Spring ’26 Edition “Everywhere”: commerce everywhere – including the chatbot

The June edition is the most consistent agentic-commerce bet a major platform has made so far.

UCP is the default. The Universal Commerce Protocol is enabled on every store; Shopify Catalog structures product data and automatically syndicates eligible products to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and the Shop app. Merchants build nothing – but their data has to survive the machine comparison. What that means strategically is covered in Agent-Ready Commerce and the agentic commerce guide.

The admin gets an AI cockpit. The new agentic section shows orders, revenue and conversions per AI channel at a glance. The real gem is Search Intelligence: the most frequent AI queries in your product category, including where your store appears in agent answers and where it doesn’t – with concrete recommendations. Effectively the first Search Console for the AI channel; how to actively improve your visibility there is covered in LLM optimisation.

Sidekick opens up to apps. Via Sidekick App Extensions, more than 15 third-party apps – including Klaviyo and Judge.me – expose their functions directly inside the assistant. On top comes Campaign Autopilot: AI-guided marketing campaigns entirely from the admin. Shopify Magic adds image tools (background removal, variant image generation, light and colour correction) that noticeably relieve product-photography budgets.

Testing and converting, natively. The new A/B testing for themes and checkout configurations makes third-party tools redundant for standard cases; Shopify Email gets its own A/B tests, finer segmentation and new templates. The one-page checkout prefills more intelligently (smart autofill) and orders payment methods dynamically by device, region and history; one-click upsells before the confirmation page are available from Advanced.

Shop Pay everywhere, B2B for everyone, POS v11. Shop Pay is now open to brands outside Shopify, handles subscriptions and instalments in more categories; Shopify Payments rewards volume above $100k monthly revenue with better rates. B2B basics move into every plan tier – the Winter features stay Plus in depth, but entering wholesale no longer requires an upgrade. The new POS v11 unifies till and admin (including a retail AI assistant at the counter), and fulfilment gains substance: an integrated 3PL marketplace, precise delivery promises from real carrier data, and automated shipping rules that pick carrier and service level themselves.

For developers, Hydrogen was rebuilt – framework- and runtime-agnostic, with a visual editor for non-developers – and a library of 40+ production-ready storefront components (product cards, variant selectors, account and B2B flows) cuts custom builds from days to hours. Whether headless is worth it at all remains its own calculation – our take: Headless & Composable Commerce.

The deadline that is no more: the Scripts shutdown

Shopify Scripts was permanently shut down on 30 June 2026. Discount, shipping and payment logic that was not migrated to Shopify Functions simply stopped running on 1 July – you may notice it as carts showing wrong prices. If you still have legacy logic: the Functions migration is no longer maintenance, it is an emergency task.

Prioritisation: what matters first, for whom

Update For whom Urgency
Migrate Scripts → Functions Anyone with legacy discount/shipping logic Now (it no longer runs)
Make product data UCP-ready Everyone High – decides AI visibility
Put Search Intelligence in reporting Everyone High – new channel, new data
Re-check Plus vs. checkout extensions Basic/Shopify/Advanced Medium – may save real money
Set up native A/B testing Everyone Medium – free CVR lever
Activate B2B basics Merchants with business customers Medium
Sidekick flows for routines Small teams As needed

What to do now

  1. Scripts check: still running legacy logic? Migrate immediately.
  2. Product data audit: attributes, availability, terms – the agent compares mercilessly (why, explained here).
  3. Look at the agentic section: Search Intelligence reveals which AI queries drive your category – and where you’re missing.
  4. Redo the Plus maths: if checkout customisation was the reason, it’s gone; if B2B basics are enough, likewise.
  5. Start one real A/B test: a theme variant or checkout configuration – getting started now costs nothing.

Bottom line

2026 is the year Shopify did two things at once: it extended commerce into the AI assistants before the competition had the infrastructure – and with the checkout opening and B2B-for-everyone it cancelled two of the oldest reasons for expensive upgrades. For merchants that means the platform work shifts from technology to data. If you have product data, terms and a testing culture under control, the new AI channel comes practically free – the rest is in the complete Shopify guide.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)?

UCP is the open standard that lets AI shopping agents read Shopify catalogues, build carts and initiate transactions – across the entire commerce journey. Since the Spring '26 Edition it is active by default on every Shopify store; products are discoverable to agents without merchants building any custom integration. In practice this means the question is no longer whether your store becomes agent-ready, but whether your product data is good enough to win in agent answers.

Do I need to set anything up for agentic storefronts?

Shopify handles the base connection: Shopify Catalog structures your product data and automatically syndicates eligible products to AI surfaces such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and the Shop app. The admin has a dedicated agentic section showing orders, revenue and conversions per AI channel. Your work is in the data – complete attributes, clear product copy, correct availability and competitive terms decide whether an agent suggests your product or your competitor's.

What happened to Shopify Scripts?

Shopify Scripts was permanently shut down on 30 June 2026. Discount, shipping and payment logic that had not been migrated to Shopify Functions stopped working on 1 July. Anyone who has not yet moved affected logic should do so with top priority – Functions is the only supported path for these customisations.

Are checkout customisations really possible without Plus now?

Yes – one of the biggest changes of the Winter Edition: Checkout UI Extensions moved from Plus exclusivity to all paid plans. Custom checkout components – trust elements, extra fields, notices – now work on Basic and Shopify plans too. The deepest tier, composable Checkout Components without a full headless rebuild, remains Plus-only. For many stores the main reason for an expensive Plus upgrade is gone.

What does Sidekick actually deliver day to day?

In 2026 Sidekick went from chat tool to operator: it executes multi-step admin tasks in a single request, builds complete Flow automations from one sentence ("tag customers who spend over 200 euros"), creates analytics reports in natural language and can even generate simple custom apps. Sidekick Pulse adds proactive improvement suggestions based on your store data. It remains an assistant – reviewing its output is still part of the job.

What is Search Intelligence in the agentic section?

Search Intelligence shows the most frequent AI queries in your product category – including which ones your store appears for in agent answers and which ones it doesn't, with concrete recommendations. It is effectively the first Search Console for the AI channel and belongs in every SEO report next to classic ranking data from now on.

Is native A/B testing enough, or do I still need third-party tools?

For standard cases native A/B testing replaces external tools: themes and checkout configurations can be tested against each other directly, plus Shopify Email gets A/B testing for subject lines, send times and content. Specialised testing suites keep their place for server-side experiments, complex audience splits or feature flags – but getting started with testing now costs neither money nor integration effort.
